What to Wear to ACL

We recently reached out to one of Austin's most fashionable women, Cheryl Bemis, for advice about what to wear to the Austin City Limits Music Festival. As moms of a certain age, we know that flower crowns and various festival trends are not for us. Thankfully, Cheryl shares some great advice...

ACL: What to Wear (Especially for Moms)

It’s October in Austin so let the list of local events begin! Of course, the premier annual Austin City Limits Music Festival will kick things off this weekend AND then it all happens again the following weekend. Not only will you enjoy some great music but it is also a great crowd-watching opportunity to see some great music-festival fashion.

I have seen some fashion coverage on what to wear to ACL, and while all helpful, it is geared for younger age groups. And we all know, not all the attendees will be in their 20’s and 30’s. There will certainly be some 40’s and 50’s gals who have rocked it out for years (ok decades), and we’re moms and some of us are now enjoying being grandmothers. Despite your place in life, you can still have fun, dress appropriately and be proud of your pictures in years to come.

To help you out, here is some advice along with some advice from contributing Fashionably Austin followers to help guide you for a fashionable weekend.

First, this is not the weekend go shopping in your daughter’s closet. Living your past rock ‘n roll days are best to stay in your memory or in a photograph. Casual and comfort are your biggest friends for a successful wardrobe weekend.

Tops: White tank tops are not recommended. “Because it's probably going to rain, you don't want anything "see through". If it doesn't rain, at least the tank top will be cooler than a t-shirt, said Courtney Carothers. (By the way, no worries about the weather for Weekend One -- it looks like it will be perfect.)

Color: Wearing black will always work. It is the easiest and best way to look chic and age appropriate, did you hear? It is also the biggest trend for Fall. Pair your black shorts or jeans and keep the color going with shoes, jewelry, and hat.

Shoes: Leave the sandals and flip flops at home. Besides stating the obvious about exposed toes, keep them safe from excited music-hopping lovers at the venue of your favorite band. I would suggest cowboy boots or tennis shoes.

Dresses: I am a huge fan of this category. You can easily take a sundress, pair it with cowboy boots and pair it with a cardigan or jean jacket for evening shows and you are out the door. Maxi skirts are also a fantastic option.

Hats/Sunglasses: Absolutely the best category for the gal over 40. Yes, run and get yourself a kick-butt hat. Cowboy hat in any style, wide brimmed, fun, vintage, any will work. Pair it with your sunglasses (cause you’re going to need them this weekend) and make sure you post a selfie!

Bags: A cross bag to store the essentials like driver’s license, phone, little cash or a credit card will keep your hands free to applaud your favorite band while keeping things safe.

Make up: Courtney added some great makeup advice: “make-up will melt off and look horrible in your group selfies.” Sunscreen, mascara and some light gloss will be your simple makeup routine for the weekend.

Get ready to rock it out and enjoy a great music festival in Austin...your music AND fashion city for October.
